Special meeting of the Michigan State Board of Ag-
riculture at the Secretary's Office in Lansing, January
8th, 1867: Present, Messrs Wells, Gage, Prutzman,
Carpenter, Rich, Hosford, Abbot, & the Secretary.

The proceedings of the last meeting were read &
approved.
Mr Abbot reported that S.S. Rockwell entered
on his duties as Steward of the College Boarding Hall
on the day of December, last

On the motion of Mr Gage, Mr Abbot's plan of analysis
of warrant account was adopted.
Adjourned to 9 o'clock, A.M., tomorrow.
January 9th. Board met & resumed business.
[Estimates]
It was resolved that the Board approve & adopt
the estimates for expenses for the year 1867 & 1868,
submitted by Mr Abbot, as follows:
1867 - Salaries, including Steward, Foreman,
& Assistant Chemist - - $10,575.00
Debt at Dec. 1, 1866 - 2,528.16
Expenses of meetings of Board of Agriculture 500.00
Salary of Secretary Howard - 500.00
Labor of Students - 2,500.00
Expenses of hired hands, three on Farm,
& one in Garden, with their board,
& all current expenses of the [Farm-House?] 2,200.00
Expenses of Horticultural Department
grounds, lawns, orchards, manures, tools,
seeds, etc., but not including a Green-House
& Propugating-House, which the College
very much needs - - - 500.00
Postage, $50 – printing, binding, etc., $175.= 225.00
College Hall expenses, lights, office expenses,

It was resolved that the charge for hay to the Farm, in Prof.
Prentiss's account, be taken at 25 per cent deduction for shrink-
age: & that Prof. Prentiss's credit to the Farm for horse-keeping, [illegible in original]
wagon with the charge of Dr Miles for the same.
Adjourned to 9 o'clock tomorrow morning.
Jan. 10th. Board met pursuant to adjournment.
The following resolutions were passed:

Supten. Farm]
Resolved, that the resignation of Dr Manly Miles, as Farm Su-
perintendent, be accepted, to take effect as soon as arrangements
can be made to supply his place; & that the thanks of the Board
be tendered to him for his faithfulness & untiring industry in the
discharge of the many & important duties heretofore assigned
him; & that the reclamation & sales of Swamp Lands be con-
tinued in his charge, in connection with the duties of
his professorship.
[Com. on Employees]
Resolved, that the Vice-President of the Board & the Com-
mittee on Farm-Management, be added to the Committee
on Employe's to form a Committee to fill the position of
Superintendent of the Farm – the Chairmen of the Com-
mittee on Employe's to be Chairman of the combined
committee.
[Accounts]
The following accounts were adopted:
Account of Farm Department against Boarding-Hall.
Account of Farm Department against College.
Accounts of Farm Superintendent marked A, B, & C, with
amendments.
Resolved, that the President of the College & the Secretary,
have charge of the arrangement of the accounts & papers for
publication.
Mr T.T. Lyon having appeared before the Board for the
purpose of obtaining some action calculated to call the
attention of the Legislature of this State to the importance of pro-
tection of crops, etc., against winds, the following resolution
was passed.

Resolved that Mr T.T. Lyon & the Secretary of this Board pre-
pare a Memorial to the Legislature [several words illegible in original],
on the subject of the [illegible in original] destruction of forest trees
in this State, the importance of checking this evil,
& the expediency of encouraging the planting of trees as a
means of shelter & protections to crops, fruit trees, etc.

Meeting of the Michigan State Board of Agriculture
at the Secretary's office in Lansing April 16th 1867.
Present, Messrs Wells, Gage, Prutzman, Carpen-
ter, Hosford, Knapp, & the Secretary.
The proceedings of the last meeting were read &
aproved.
Adjourned to meet at the State Agricultural
College tomorrow morning.

State Agricultural College, April 17th, 1867. The
Board met pursuant to adjournment, all the
members being present.
It was
[Rails]
Resolved that the Farm Superintendent
be authorized to contract for the splitting
of 3,000 rails, to be used as far as needed in en-
closing the cleared lands north of fields No.
g & [:5010?] – the under [brushing?] of the land to be
done by students & farm laborers.

[Slop Tank]
Resolved that the Farm Superintendent have
charge of the tank which receives the waste
water from the Boarding Hall.

[Pears]
[Grapes]
Resolved that the Superintendent of the Hor-
ticultural Department be authorized to fill the
vacancies in the pear orchard with standard
trees where standards were before planted, & with
dwarfs where dwarfs were planted [illegible in original] that he
got a dozen Concord grape-vines on the land
adjacent to & west of the pear orchard

[Loan]
Resolved, that the Superintendent of the Hor-
ticultural Department be authorised to com-
mence the improvement of the lawn north of
the Boarding Hall & east of the well at the Col-
lege-Hall.

The Committee on Accounts submitted the

Resignation]
Mr Gage from the Committee on Employe's
reported the resignation of Prof. Clute. The
resignation was accepted.

[Library cases]
The Faculty was authorised to have books
cases made for books for the Library of the College.

[Hard Book]
Resolved, that Secretary Howard make out
the prdigrees for of the Short horns, Devon
& Ayrshire cattle belonging to the College, & have
the same inserted in the forthcoming Herd-Books

[Books]
The Faculty was authorized to spend $400.00 for the
purchase of books.

[Fence]
The Superintendent of the Farm was directed to put
up a board fence along the plank road from
the east end of the farm to the present [illegible in original]

[Leave of Absence]
that
Resolved ^ the Commissioner of highways for
the township of Lansing, be requested to remove
the location of the road running through the
farm, to a position further west, lying be-
low the hill west of the houses occupied by
the President & Professors.

The Board took a recess till 7 o'clk. tomorrow
morning.
April 18th. Board met _ all members present.

[Salaries]
A proposition to increese the salaries of certain
officers was laid on the table till the May meet-
ing of the Board.

[Carpet]
Mr Rockwell was authorized to buy & put down
in the Boarding Hall parlor, an ingrain carpet.

[Funds]
Resolved, that the [sum?] of Five thousand Dollars
be drawn from the State Treasury into the hands of
the Treasurer of the College; that above sum to
be additional to the $5000 already drawn from
the appropriation for 1867, which [illegible in original] the
Board of Agriculture hereby approve

[Houses Free]
Resolved, that no house rent be charged officers
occupying houses belonging to the College, untill further
action on this subject be taken by the Board

[Wagon]
Resolved, that Mr Knapp be a committee to
procure a wagon for the use of the Boarding-

Hall, & that he have authority to purchase the same.

[Botanl. Museum]
Resolved, that the sum of $25.00 be appropriated to the in-
crease of the Botanical Museum, & that Prof. Prentiss
have the spending of the same.

[Swamp Lands]
Resolved, that Judge Wells & Mr Knapp be
a committee to report to the Board at the
May meeting, plans for the disposition of the

of the Swamp Lands, & the creation of additional build-
ings for the College.

[Fence]
[Drain]
Resolved that the fence [illegible in original] in [illegible in original] of construct-
tion between fields No 9 & No 3, be removed to the
south line of the orchard, & that a division of
field No 1 be made by a [cross?] fence west of the
orchard; also that a tile drain be constructed so
as to drain the low land on the north side
of field No. 3, & south side of field No 1.

Resolved, that a tile drain be constructed to car-
ry off the water from the muck-bed east of the
barn-yard

[Fruit Trees]
Resolved, that the Superintendent of the Horti-
cultural Department be instructed to make ar-
rangements for improving the high grounds bor-
dering on the river [flat?] south of the College build-
ings & garden grounds, by setting fruit trees.

[Kedzie House]
Resolved, that $100.00 be allowed for Kedzie tow-
ards making an addition to the house occupied by
him.

State Agricultural College, May 29, 1867.
Regular meeting of the State Board of Agriculture. Present,
Abbot
Messrs Wells, Gage, Prutzman, Hosford, ^ & the Secretary.
The proceedings of the last meeting were read & ap-
proved.
[Road]
Mr Abbot reported, verbally, that the public road
through the College grounds had been [illegible in original] agreeably
to a resolution passed at the last meeting of the Board,
whereupon it was
Resolved, that President Abbot & Dr Miles be au-
thorized to contract for the making of rail road.
It was

Resolved, that the sum of Five Thousand Dollars
be drawn from the State Treasury into the hands of
the Treasurer of the Board.

[Herbarium]
Resolved, that the sum of $100 be appropriated for
the purchase of paper for the Herbarium of the
College, to be expended under the direction of Prof.
Prentiss.

[Cheml. Advances]
Resolved, that no student shall be permitted to enter
on the study of Analytical Chemistry until he shall
have deposited $15.00 with the Secretary of the College,
to cover the estimated cost of chemicals used by him.

Resolved, that it shall be the duty of the Professor of
Chemistry to render an account to the Secretary of the
College of the charges of the Laboratory & Department of
Chemistry against any student as early as may be
after the termination of study of each student in chem-
istry, each half year.

[Fairs: no Premiums]
Resolved, that any stock, or produce, or property of
the Agricultural College that shall be exhibited at the
Fairs, Shows, or Festivals of any Agricultural Society
shall be entered for exhibition only.

[ R ]
[Tools on Trial]
Resolved, that no farming, or other implements not
belonging to the College, shall be taken to be used on
trial at the College Farm, or borrowed for the Col-
lege to use, without authority from the President
of the College.

[Ayreshire Bull]
Resolved, that Dr. Miles be authorized to make
sale of the Ayreshire bull calf Montrose, for the sum
of $125.00, on condition that the purchaser give the State
Agricultural College the refusal of said animal when-
ever he wishes to dispose of him.

[Ditch]
Resolved, that the President of the College be, & he is
hereby authorized to spend, if he shall deem it
expedient & proper, a sum not exceeding Twenty-
five Dollars, in connection with the proposition of
the Highway Commissioner to ditch through
lands belonging to the College, on the south-western
portion of the College Farms.

[Swamp Lands]
Resolved, that Hezekiah G. Wells & S.O. Knapp
constitute a committee hereby authorized to
make sale of the Swamp Land, belonging to the
College, in whole or in part, at a price not less
than Five Dollars an acre.

[Farm House]
Resolved, that the President of the College be au-
thorized to spend a sum not exceeding Three
Hundred Dollars, for additional kitchen, bedroom,
& pantry, to the house occupied by the foreman of
the Farm.

State Agricultural College, August 28th, 1867.

Regular meeting of the State Board of Agriculture: Present
Messrs Wells, Gage, Carpenter, Hosford, Knapp, Abbot, & the
Secretary.
The proceedings of the last meeting were read & approved.
It was
[Funds]
Resolved, that the sum of Five Thousand Dollars be drawn
from the State Treasurey into the hands of the Treasurer of the Board

Judge Wells stated that he had corresponded with various
persons in regard to the purchase of Swamp Lands, & had re-
ceived an offer for a tract, in reference to which it was

[Chandler
Big Marsh]
Resolved that this Board accept the proposition of
Hon. Z. Chandler to purchase 880 acres of the Large Marsh
belonging to the College _ being the portion lying in the township
of Bath _ at Eight Dollars per acre.

[Green House]
Resolved, that the sum of Two Thousand Five Hundred
Dollars of the amount to be received from the sale of Marsh
Lands, be appropriated to the erection of a Green House or Sta-
ble for the use of the Horticultural Department _ the same
being instead of an appropriation allowed by a res-
olution passed by the Board June 1, 1865.

Resolved, that this Board hold an extra meeting at the
office of the President of the College, on Wednesday morning.
13th of November next, at 8 o'clock, A.M.

Resolved, that this Board hold an extra session in Detroit,
September 11, 1867, at 8 o'clock, P.M., in the Michigan Exchange

Asst. Ch. Prof.]
Resolved, that Wm. D. Daniels be hereby, appointed
Adjutant Professor of Chemistry, with a salary at the
rate of $1000 per year _ the duties of said Professorship &
Salary to commence on the 15th of November next.

Resolved, that from & after the first of September next,
the salaries of the following officers be at the rates here
[annexed?]:
President, $2250 per year.
Officers holding full professorship, $1,500 per year.

[Foreman]
Mr Gage, from the Committee Employe's, made a report
recommending the employment of G. W. Harrison as
Assistant Foreman on the Farm, at the rate Thirty Dollars
per month. The recommendation was adopted.

[Drives]
Resolved, that the new entrance to the College Grounds
be from the Plank Road, just opposite the end of the
Ingham & Clinton State Road; & that the Faculty be au-
thrized to lay out the drives from that point to the
College Hall, the Boarding Hall, & the Professors houses.

[Fence]
Resolved, that the board fence heretofore ordered to be
made from the east line of the Farm along the Plank
Road to the present entrance to the College, be contin-
ued to the new entrance this day fixed upon by the Board.

[Prof's Barn]
Resolved, that $50 be appropriated to build a barn
for the house occupied by Professor Fairchild.

[Big Marsh]
Resolved, that Messrs Wells & Abbot constitute a
committee authorized to continue the con-
struction of the main drain for the Large
Marsh.

[Insurance]
Resolved, that insurance be effected upon the
Cattle & Sheep barns & their contents, by the President
of the College.

Judge Wells, Chairman of the Committee on Swamp Land,
reported that, in accordance with a resolution of the Board,
a tract of the land had been sold to Hon. Z. Chandler.

Raymond, for books, & for 684, being $50 expenses for Farm House,

ed. Of the other two, Nos. 689, for $150, is held by Mr Rockwell as a
continued fund for the payment of current expenses of the Boarding-

[Ayreshire Bull]
Resolved, that the College purchase the Ayreshire bull calf
Dundee
Douglass, for which the sum of One Hundred ($100) Dollars
is to be paid to Messrs Wolcott & Campbell, of New
York Mills, N.Y., on the first of July, 1868.

[Highland Ram]
Resolved, that the thanks of this Board be presented to
T.L. Harison, Esq., of Morley, N.Y., for the donation
to the Michigan State Agricultural College of [illegible in original]
Scotch Highland ram.

[Gang Plow]
Resolved, that the thanks of this Board be presented
to A.S. Briarlee, & Co., Trenton, N.J., for the donation
to the Michigan State Agricultural College, of Phifer's
Improved Cultivator & Gang Plough.

[New Bdg. Hall]
Resolved, thatMr Knapp extend to Mr W.H.
Mallory an invitation to meet with the Board
at its next session, to discuss plans for a new
Boarding Hall.

Resolved, that the Board hold a meeting at the
office of the Secretary, in Lansing, on Tuesday evening
January 14th., next.
